About us

Hi! My name is Keyanna Swanson. If we have not yet had the chance to meet, I would like to introduce myself as the new owner/operator of Prairie Diagnostic Seed Lab.

In June of 2022, I finished my degree at the University of Saskatchewan with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture, majoring in Applied Plant Ecology. With the incredible guidance of the previous owners, Bonnie Ernst and Kelly Hansen, I have ran the Seed Lab this past year and a half in Weyburn, SK. The two of them spent the past two years beginning to teach me the ins and outs of the Lab.

During this time I also completed my Germination Accreditation and am currently working on my Purity Accreditation.

The year of 2024 sparks the Lab’s twentieth anniversary! I plan on keeping the same services available at the same level of reliability and consistency our customers have come to know and appreciate.

Wishing Kelly Hansen a Happy Retirement!

The end of the 2023 testing season marks the start of Kelly’s retirement. Bonnie and I are sad to see her go but wish her the best!

The Lab

The Prairie Diagnostic Seed Lab is accredited in Germination, Purity, Grading and True Loose Smut. We also offer a variety of other common seed tests such as Vigour, Disease for Cereals and Pulses, Thousand Kernel Weight and more.

When your sample is received, we try our best to have testing complete by the end of three weeks, relative to the length of the tests required. The average testing package will likely be complete in two weeks.

Policy: Payment must be received in order for results to be released. To ensure customers receive results in a timely manner, we suggest including payment with your sample.

Why Test?

A good crop starts with good seed.

Many factors affect seed quality. Hail, frost, too much or little rain during the growing season affect the plant health, and ultimately the seed. Conditions during harvest and storage, can also impact your seed. Quality cannot be judged by looks alone. Sprouting, fungal issues, mechanical or chemical damage and more, can affect the quality of your seed.

Good agronomic practices include testing your seed, giving accurate, reproducible results. Results used to help make important decisions on your farm.

Seed testing doesn’t cost, it pays!
